Monday-Friday 8/24-28/20

This week, students have been showing off their Postcard Projects. It has been nice getting to know everyone a little better. They have also been reading and annotating Newsela articles about how curiosity and motivation affect learning. I thought that I was going to begin Vocab this week, but I changed my mind. We will start that on Monday.

HOMEWORK:

  • The Postcard Project due 8/24/20

  • Newsela article w/ annotations due 8/28/20

Wednesday and Friday 8/19 and 21/20

On Wednesday, we continued talking about Metacognition (awareness of one's own thinking). Students answered the following questions to help them be more conscious of their ambitions for this course.

  1. Why is it important to learn the material in this course?

  2. How does success in this course directly relate to my future goals?

  3. What specific skills do I want to possess by the end of this course?

  4. How am I going to actively monitor my learning in this course?

After reviewing students' answers to each question, we moved on to The Postcard Project.  I showed them a potential example and went over my expectations. Namely, make it awesome. More specifically, make your presentation original, engaging, and entertaining. We have to sit through close to thirty of these. It will be a joy if everyone does their best, but it will be rough if people just go through the motions. The homework is to come up with a plan and be ready to share it on Friday. Presentations will begin on Monday 8/24/20.

On Friday, students shared their ideas for the Project. My final suggestion is upon completion, ask yourself, "Would I enjoy sitting through this presentation?" If the answer is "Yes!", go with it. If the answer is "no", figure out how to make it more original, entertaining, and engaging.

Greetings from the World Wide Web! We are scheduled for our first Zoom meeting on Monday the 17th at 10:00am. I am posting the link on the google classroom page for this class. Students have been emailed the link in order to enter the classroom. In the mean time, please familiarize yourself with the Zoom Conference Expectations located below. Click the link!

Boger's Zoom Expectations

Monday 8/17/20

Good afternoon, today we held our first Zoom conference. Although some folks had a hard time getting in, the majority of people were able to arrive. I spent the time going over the syllabus. After that, we discussed classroom expectations and protocols. At the end of class, students completed the first two assignments of the semester. First they wrote down what they expect their day-to-day schedule will look like. Next, they answered two timed writing prompts. The first was what their lives will look like at the end of this semester if they put everything they have into organization, discipline, and hard work. Next, they addressed a prompt asking them what their lives will look like at the end of the semester if they have no organization or discipline, and only do what feels good in the moment.
